The film is primarily a comedy, and it's a real comedy. The jokes aren't just meant to "make you think", they're really there to make you laugh, so while the movie definitely makes its point, it's certainly not the sort of humor that's "Not funny, but has something to say". The humor is, in fact, incredibly funny.

When Kubrick dealt with similar subject matter in Full Metal Jacket, he managed to make a movie that was just as funny without it being so overt. There are no direct jokes in that film, but the movie stands as a comic masterpiece nevertheless. By the mid eighties it would seem that Stanley Kubrick had come to think that you don't need jokes to make war seem absurd.

The heart of the cast is Peter Sellers, who plays several characters. In today's Hollywood, one comic actor in multiple roles is usually a sign of a terrible comedy, where they thought that five unfunny characters could be made funny if they were all played by the same guy wearing a variety of fat suits and women's dresses. Sellers, on the other hand, was just the most capable actor of playing all of these wild characters.

The primary performance here is of course Dr. Strangelove himself, the crazy former Nazi who sits in a wheelchair and whose "alien hand" will throw up a Nazi salute at the worst possible moments. It is through Strangelove that we most clearly see the link between nuclear weapons and sexual dysfunction, with Strangelove showing a tangible sense of sexual thrill at the possibility of a nuclear winter.

George C. Scott turns in an incredible performance as General Buck Turgidson. The character is much wilder, more manic than anything Scott has done. He's usually seen as this master of gruff understatement, saying more with a growly whisper than most actors say with a big speech. Kubrick actually had to trick him into going so over the top by promising that these would be "practice takes" where he could take the scene farther than it needed to go to get the kinks out! Similarly, Slim Pickens was tricked into playing it straight as Major Kong by being told it was a dramatic war film.

Overall, this is a great disaster movie filled with great special effects, and human drama. It does have a bit of a moral message that wouldn't seem disagreeable to too many people, but the overall story is entertaining and doesn't slow at any point during the movie. It' keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

The movie begins with a couple of scientists, one working for the U.S. government, who discover some troubling data suggesting that the earth only has a few years left before global catastrophe strikes. We aren't sure what is going to happen, but we know that it is deadly serious. So much so the world governments engage in secret planning to prevent global panic.

Meanwhile, in common disaster movie tradition, the movie jumps between different characters, and how they deal with the slow revelation that something much bigger than they can handle is going on around them. Some of these characters of course come together in the end, and help each other, for the most part, to survive the calamity.

Other characters that are completely likable and free from any traditional flaws discover the impending doom, and don't make it out alive. We need to see that even though some will make it past the impending disaster, many will not. We need to feel their pain.

As those that survive come together and discover the "project" that the world governments have been secretly working on, we are faced with a dilemma. If you were to only save a small percentage of the population, who would be saved? The super smart? The super rich? The common man? I believe this question is effectively and satisfactorily answered. The left-brained position means arguments that watch the economics -- money misspent, opportunities wasted. But that isn't to say the film is without heart. Bowdon makes certain his eye is invariably on the people affected, in particular the inner-city students trapped in a damaged system. The mythology inspired ballet Sylvia, is a three-act ballet set to the music of French Composer Lo Delibes. Often considered to be one of Delibes's greatest musical works, this ballet made its debut in 1876 in Paris. The inspiration for the ballet's story is believed to be the 1573 pastoral play 'Aminta' by Italian poet Torquato Tasso. It premiered at the Palais Garnier in Paris on June 14th 1876 was unfortunately met with a poor reception and subsequent productions of the ballet were also largely unsuccessful.

It was the renowned dancer and choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton who resurrected the almost forgotten ballet in 1952. Sir Frederick tried to give the ballet more popular appeal reducing it to a one-act piece but Sylvia could still not capture the publics' heart and Ashton eventually gave up on it in 1965. Sir Frederick believed in Sylvia though and had expressed a desire to rework it once again into a three-act ballet. This was picked up on by one of his former students, Christopher Newton, who rewrote Sylvia for the 21st Century audience and a three-act version close to Sir Frederick's vision appeared on stage in 2001.

The main roles in the ballet come from mythology; they are Sylvia a huntress nymph, Aminta a shepherd who is in love with Sylvia, Eros the God of love, Diana the Goddess of chastity and the hunt and Orion a malevolent hunter who kidnaps Sylvia. Minor roles include peasants, hunt attendants, goats, fauns and various nymphs and dryads.

The first act of the ballet is called A Sacred Wood and begins with Aminta stumbling upon the various woodland creatures dancing before the God Eros. Sylvia, the object of Aminta's desire, and her fellow hunters also arrive at the woodland ritual for Eros and begin to mock the God. Confusion breaks out when Sylvia spies the hidden Aminta and she fires her bow at Eros. Aminta in trying to protect Eros is injured by Sylvia's arrow and Eros shoots Sylvia who is mildly injured. Sylvia's unwelcome admirer Orion has also been watching this scene and he continues to spy as Sylvia returns to check up on the wounded Aminta and seizes the opportunity to kidnap the young nymph. Eros revives Aminta and tells him of Orion's kidnap.

Act two is titled Orion's Island Cave, which is the location Orion brings the kidnapped Sylvia to. Sylvia stubbornly refuses all offers of kindness such as jewelry and wine from Orion with her only thoughts focused on the wounded Aminta. She fakes a change of heart, getting Orion drunk on the wine so that she can make her escape. After invoking the God of love Eros, Sylvia receives a vision that Aminta is waiting for her at the temple of the Goddess Diana and with the help of Eros escapes from Orion.

The Sea Coast Near The Temple Of Diana is the title of the third act and it is here we see Sylvia and Aminta reunited. Orion is not far behind Sylvia though and when he also arrives at the temple he begins to fight with Aminta. In the ensuing confusion Orion enters the shrine of Diana, which is strictly forbidden and the enraged Goddess refuses to give Aminta and Sylvia her blessing. However Eros restores harmony be showing Diana a vision of her own first love who was also a shepherd boy.
